Greetings!
It is time for the monthly round up of all the blogging I’ve been doing since last month. As usual, it coincides with a show for Big Trouble on Saturday at White Squirrel. This show will also function as my birthday party of sorts as I turn 44 on Friday. Come on out if you can! Also, Josh Peterson, the guitar player from Big Trouble that I am not related to by blood, doubted the attendance impact that this blog has on the White Squirrel events. Outrageous! This blog is a star-maker, Josh. I can barely leave the house without someone yelling “I’m in the McPherson Club and I love it!” Josh, we both play music up on stage at White Squirrel. I spend hours afterwards autographing Substack full-color printouts from the adoring 169. Josh, this blog is on the frontlines of ushering people out of the bullshit of social media and instead finding out about great music events inside of a newsletter. If you see Josh on Saturday let him know you’re here because of the power of the blog.
I am the co-owner of Trivia Mafia and we just put out some promo videos that I think are awesome. Take a look!
I got to interview Michael Bland of Prince/Soul Asylum/Holy Shit What a Great Drummer Fame
I also got to interview saxophonist/flutist/composer Shabaka in advance of a show he did at the Walker
On to blogging!
Fake Drugs
The family vacation was to D.C. last week and it was a whirlwind. Walked through cherry blossoms on a perfect breezy day and felt as though there was nothing better on Earth than the weather and the company that day. Went to the Lincoln Memorial, The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, The Thomas Jefferson Memorial, The Vietnam Memorial, The African-Americ…
Saint Paul Lunches
I had two really good Saint Paul lunches this week that you should consider adding to your repertoire.
Indochin’s Shrimp Panang Curry Refuses to Stop
Did you grow up with panang curry? I sure didn’t. I don’t think I hit a panang curry until maybe late 2010s. I don’t even remember checking for it when I started going deep on Thai food in my twenties. Panang curry is creamy, nutty and the vegetables just sing in the dish. They don’t seem beat down or soaked in a too thick sauce. During the pandemic my …
Reuniting with Ela
I’ve never felt worse about being in an indie rock band when compared to post-hardcore/emo and post-hardcore/math rock as potential style descriptions
This is The Best Time of the Year
We are in the NBA post season. Today was the first day that I could hear a bird that was up before I was. When I wake up at 6:25 weekday mornings there is already strong sun. Children are preparing for final performances and final projects. Every week someone announces a new outdoor concert, event, offering. Good movies that people care about are coming…
I’ll see you on Saturday! Thanks for reading these, I sincerely appreciate it.
Great mix of posts! And loved the interview with Michael Bland - he looks just like his dad - Murray Jr High's best science teacher.
